Friday, October 4th, 5 PM – Hundreds of people joined the fun Friday night at the Village Chocolate Shoppe, 471 Main Street, Bennington, VT, as the Monte family set a world’s record for making the largest peanut butter cup ever. Town officials were present to document the weight and size. Under a sidewalk pavilion, with television cameras rolling, Nick Monte carefully constructed the giant confection using a custom made giant mold over four feet across, spatulas, spreaders, and a paint brush. About 50 pounds of melted chocolate were carried pitcher by pitcher from the shop and smoothed carefully to create the shell. Over 159 pounds of peanut butter creme were made ahead of time and carried out and weighed in bowls to create the delicious filling.
After 8 pm, when the candy was firm and the historic record thoroughly documented for posterity, the world’s largest peanut butter cup was cut into 500 chunks and sold at $3.00 each to benefit PAVE (Project Against Violent Encounters). Over 400 pieces were sold that evening to people lined up all the way down Main Street, and the rest sold quickly Saturday morning. PAVE’s heartfelt thanks go to Nick and Judy Monte and family for their ongoing support of PAVE, and for making this truly yummy fundraiser possible.
